A Middle East scholar and foreign policy expert, Vali Nasr immigrated to the U.S. in 1979. His books Forces of Fortune and The Shia Revival, which examined post-war violence in Iraq and the Arab Spring, influenced U.S. policy in response to those events. He has also served as a special advisor to the President’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Currently, he serves as dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and as a member of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Affairs Policy Board.
