Renowned Italian soprano Renata Scotto is known as one of “the last of the divas,” known for her vocal flexibility, dramatic intensity, and her commitment to keeping her performances as close to the composer’s intentions as possible. She made her U.S. debut at the Chicago Lyric Opera in 1960, as Mimi of La bohème, and her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1965, as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly. She became a major star, winning wide recognition for her appearances in telecasts. Since retiring, she has directed operas and taught in both New York and Rome.
