Orlando Patterson

Historical and cultural sociologist Orlando Patterson is the John Cowles Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. Writing about the culture of freedom, slavery, race, and poverty among Caribbean and African-American youth, he has been recognized with numerous honors, including the National Book Award, in 1991, for his book Freedom in the Making of Western Culture. Patterson has also written three novels, beginning in 1965 with The Children of Sisyphus. He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1991.
