The physician Khaled Hosseini wrote his debut novel, 2003’s The Kite Runner, based on his memories of his childhood in pre-Soviet Afghanistan. Winning high praise from critics, the book went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. His later novels, A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the Mountains Echoed, were also bestsellers. In 2006, Hosseini served as a goodwill envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency. He later launched the Khaled Hosseini Foundation, which provides assistance to the people of Afghanistan.
