Though he was known primarily for his science fiction novels, Isaac Asimov (1920–1992), born in Petrovichi, Russia, began his career as a biochemistry professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. His seminal short story collection, I, Robot, was published in 1950, and Asimov was credited with the coining the term “robotics.” He went on to author nearly 500 books including nonfictional works on topics such as science, mathematics, and religion. He won several Nebula and Hugo awards.
