Gerhard Casper served as the ninth president of Stanford University, from 1992 to 2000. Previously, he had served as provost of the University of Chicago and as an assistant professor of political science, at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written numerous books and taught in the fields of constitutional law, constitutional history, comparative law, and jurisprudence. The American Law Institute recognized him with its Distinguished Service Award, and he is currently a senior fellow at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
