Already a soap opera star in Mexico, Salma Hayek achieved fame in America with her role in the 1995 film Desperado. Anxious to avoid being pigeonholed into stereotypical roles of the Latina siren, she expanded her range in films such as Fools Rush In and Frida, a biopic—that she co-produced—about the artist Frida Kahlo. Branching out further, Hayek has worked as an executive producer for the sitcom Ugly Betty and director of The Maldonado Miracle. She is also president and CEO of the production company Ventanazul.
