America is a land of immigrants. Carnegie Corporation of New York has saluted the legacy of Andrew Carnegie and other immigrants every July 4th since 2006. Join us by exploring an inspiring group of well known naturalized citizens from all walks of life — the “Pride of America” — who have made notable contributions to the progress of our society.
Education: State University of New York, Farmingdale State College: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology
Eva Barros was 20 years old when she moved with her mother to Queens, New York from Medellín, Colombia in 2007. They lived with Eva’s grandmother for two years while Eva studied English and took classes at a community college and then earned a bachelor’s degree at a state university. Today they are both green card holders. Eva works as a mechanical engineer specializing in HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), while her mother works for a home improvement store. Carnegie Corporation of New York met them at a naturalization workshop sponsored by CUNY Citizenship Now, a partner in the Carnegie-funded New Americans Campaign.
